A2.Time vs Toggl
A Toggl alternative for people who bill by the hour.
Toggl is a good time tracker, and if you mostly need to know where your hours go, it may be all you need. A2.Time is narrower. It's built for one job: turning the work in your calendar into hours you can bill, invoice and defend. Here's an honest comparison, including when you should stay with Toggl.
Comparison checked October 25, 2026, against Toggl's public pricing and help pages.
The short version
The difference in one paragraph.
Toggl is a general time tracker that has grown into planning and capacity management for teams. A2.Time is a billing-first time tracker: your calendar is the source, every entry is reviewed and approved before it counts, and the output is a billing report or invoice per client or agreement. If your time turns into invoices, A2.Time is built around that. If you need planning, Jira or a large team rollout, Toggl is the stronger choice.

Where A2.Time is different
Built around the invoice, not the timer.
Your calendar is the timesheet.
You don't start timers or remember to log. At the end of the day, A2.Time shows what your calendar says you did, and you approve it in a couple of minutes.
Start with two months of history.
When you connect your calendar, A2.Time drafts entries for the last two months, so on day one you can see what last month really cost you.
No app to install.
You already schedule work in the calendar on your phone and laptop. A2.Time reads it from there, so there's nothing else to open, start or stop.
Nothing counts until you approve it.
Entries are drafts until you review them, so the record you bill from is one you've checked, not one a rule created at 9:05 am.
Billing features are not an upgrade.
Rates, rounding, fixed-fee projects, realization, team approvals and invoices with your own letterhead are in the one plan. On Toggl, several of those are on Starter or Premium.
Built by someone who bills.
I've billed my time since 2003 and ran law firms on this discipline. A2.Time is the tool I wanted, not a feature list.
When Toggl is the better choice
Stay with Toggl if…
- You want a free plan and your needs are simple.
- You track time mainly to see where it goes, not to bill it.
- You need planning, capacity or time-off management in the same tool.
- Your team works in Jira or Asana and wants tracking there.
- Your company requires SOC 2 or ISO 27001 from its vendors.
- You want a separate timer app on your phone or desktop.
I'd rather you choose the right tool than the wrong one from me.
